California Environmental Protection
Agency
11:30 AM-12:15 PM: Networking over lunch

Topic: A California Regulatory
Perspective on Nanomaterials
Existing government regulations regarding the
manufacture, properties and commercialization of
nanomaterials will be the topic of discussion
during our weekly Nano Lunch on Thursday, July
3, 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM in San Jose.
This talk will discuss a new regulatory approach the
Department of Toxic Substances Control is taking to
compile relevant information on chemicals, including
nanomaterials. AB289 was signed into law in California
in 2006. It provides a mechanism for state agencies to
collaborate with chemical manufacturers to develop a
database that includes information such as analytical
test methods, fate and transport, bioconcentration, and
other factors for chemicals manufactured or imported in
the State. Dr. Jeffrey Wong, Chief Scientist for
DTSC,
will highlight the main provisions of this new law and
how the Department and the nanotech industry can work
together in implementing it.
Stan’s is a Supervising Engineer for the Department of
Toxic Substances Control in the Office of the Chief
Scientist. He has worked in the environmental
field for over 35 years, primarily in water quality,
hazardous waste cleanup and Superfund, and pollution
prevention. From 2004-2008, he managed the State’s
Pollution Prevention and Technology Development
Programs. He has also represented states on USEPA
national advisory committees on RCRA and CERCLA and as
the National Governors Association representative to the
Defense Department’s Environmental Response Task Force.
He currently serves on the on advisory boards to the
Western Region Pollution Network and the Universities
Consortium Worker Education Training Program. He
has degrees in civil and environmental engineering from
Kansas (BS) and Illinois (MS).
An overview of the wide range of clean tech and
nanotech training programs offered by the
California Institute of Nanotechnology will also
be presented.
Our NanoLunch Seminar series is held every
Thursday from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM and feature
presentations, open discussions and networking
opportunities with industry leaders.
Registration: $10 for
non-IANANO members; free to members.

Summary
Renewable energy sources and emerging clean technologies will be
the theme for this month’s Nano Bio Clean Tech Forum on Tuesday,
April 22, sponsored by the Clean Tech Institute in conjunction
with the International Association of Nanotechnology.
Roger Bedard, Ocean Energy Leader with the Electric Power
Research Institute in Palo Alto (EPRI), will discuss the
practical applications of ocean wave energy and tidal energy.
EPRI has established two North American collaborative programs
to investigate the feasibility of ocean wave and in-stream tidal
energy conversion in North America, which brings together the
resources and knowledge of 10 state agencies, two federal
agencies, 17 electric power utilities, three universities and
more than 30 technology developers.
Guest speaker Joseph Heinzmann with Fuel Cell Energy will also
discuss the environmental and competitive advantages of
utilizing fuel cell energy for commercial purposes. Fuel Cell
Energy develops and markets Ultra-Clean stationary fuel cell
power plants that generate electricity with up to twice the
efficiency of conventional fossil fuel plants – and with
virtually no air pollution.
Group discussion will follow each of the presentations.
Registration Fee: $10 for members; $20 for
non-members and $30 at the door
