The California Institute of Nanotechnology’s mission is to conduct research and development and provide professional education and training in the frontier of nanotechnology to meet the needs of the emerging industry for the benefit of the society.

The California Institute of Nanotechnology conducts advanced & applied research in nanotechnology to help solve major problems facing mankind such as diseases, shortage of energy and global environmental issues.

With our expertise and a large network of world class collaborators focusing a broad spectrum of nanosciences and nanotechnology, we provide business and advanced technical consulting services to a number large multinational  corporations around the world.

California Institute of Nanotechnology serves as the central hub to manage a number of projects such as:

  • Conducting advanced R&D in nanomaterials, nanobiotechnology, nanoscale thin film solar cell systems.

  • Studying societal & environmental impact of converging technologies

  • Developing policy and investment initiatives for nanotech and clean tech

  • Developing international curricula for workforce training in nanotech and clean tech industry.

  • Providing education & workforce training to help dislocated workers in California to have high skilled jobs in the industry;

  • Facilitating venture investment for start-up companies.


Certified Nanotechnology & Clean Technology Professional

in San Jose

The Certified Nanotechnology & Clean Technology Professional Program will be offered in a 6 week accelerated program and a 13 week program:

1.  An accelerated 6-week intensive training, Monday to Thursday, 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM on June 2 to July 11, 2008 at our training facility in San Jose. Lab work will be conducted on Saturday from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM.

2.  A 13-week training from June 28 to September 27, 2008 in San Jose. This is an intensive week-end professional, including Industry Seminar on Thursday 11:30 AM- 1:30 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM- 5:30 PM

The intensive program is designed to train the participants for professional jobs with an opportunity for advancement in the high growth industries of nanotechnology and clean technology. The certificate classroom/lab training courses will equip you to enter into the emerging nanotech and clean tech industries. Students will be expected to demonstrate their acquired knowledge through problem solving, group discussions, and project development.

In addition to classroom learning and group project research assignment, students are expected to participate in industry seminars which will be held on Thursdays at 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Prerequisite: a 4 year degree (Bachelor of Art, Sciences or Engineering) or equivalent with at least 3 years of working experience.

Apprenticeship in Nanotech & Clean Tech
8 Weeks Classroom & Paid on the Job Training

The Apprenticeship in Nanotechnology & Clean Technology will be offered on June 2 to July 25, 2008 at our training facility in San Jose.

This intensive program is designed to train a select number of college graduates for technician jobs in the high growth industries of nanotechnology and clean technology. The first phase of the Apprenticeship program is 8 weeks of formal classroom style learning at our San Jose location to equip you with basic scientific principles and hands on training with a Scanning Electron Microscope.  Upon completion of the classes, we will setup placement in an one year paid on the job training with one of our partnering Silicon Valley Nanotech or Clean tech companies. Salaries will be
approximately 85% of the market value and partially subsidized by the U.S. Department of Labor.  

In addition to classroom learning and group project research assignment, students are expected to participate in industry seminars which will be held on Thursdays at 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM.

Contact hours: 20 hours per week over 8 weeks with a total of 160 contact hours including lectures, research assignment, group discussion, and lab work on learning how to use a Scanning Electron Microscope and lab techniques in the micro/nano fabrication.

Prerequisite: a 4 year degree (Bachelor of Sciences or Engineering).

The California Institute of Nanotechnology will be offering the Business Re-Engineering and Train the Trainers courses at the Donald F. Averill Applied Technology Training Center in San Bernardino, starting May 13, 2008.

Business Re-Engineering - provides insight on the state of nanotechnology from an industry perspective and highlights fundamental applications, environmental issues, and how to finance and run a successful nanotech venture.
